My boyfriend's father built this waterwheel on the grist mill at Longfellow's Wayside Inn in South Sudbury, MA about 40 years ago. We got to see it for the first time about a year ago and became friends with the miller who knew Sam's dad. It has a special place in our hearts.
There it stood up on the hill,
that mill from long ago;
The wheel bright red against the stone,
still turning smooth and slow.
The man had waited many years
to see the mill and wheel
his dad had built so long ago
with care and love and steel.
The miller met him at the door,
and quickly asked him in.
“I used to know your Dad,” he said,
and you look so much like him”.
The miller showed the man around,
from basement to top floor.
And even let him run the wheel
while the grain began to pour.
They walked the path along the race
and out to the old mill pond,
watching the water gently flow
over the wheel and far beyond.
So many memories from the past
for each of them to share;
the day went quickly flying by
and still they lingered there.
At last the day came to an end
as the sun set on the hill.
The miller and the man forever bound
by the wheel on the old grist mill.

Put up more pipeline yesterday - getting close to being finished, and hope to tap next weekend. Today was bitter cold and very windy, so we ran a few errands, and then my sweetie and I celebrated Valentine's Day by going to wine and chocolate event at a local winery. The folks that operate the winery are friends of ours and they have this Valentine's event every year. They serve their own strawberry wine along with everything chocolate that you can imagine - chocolate covered strawberries, chocolate mousse, chocolate fudge, chocolate cupcakes, etc. etc. - sugar shock!!! They have a beautiful converted old barn and had music and a fire going - relaxing and WARM!

My sweet cousin's in Vermont found my old blog here and suggested I should get it up and running again - so here goes!
Spent the day in the woods today with my sweetie hanging mainline and lateral tubing (I think those are the right words) to gather sap. It will be my first try at "sugaring", although Sam has done it before, just not recently. It's going slower than we thought, but the terrain is very rocky, lots of downed limbs, etc. once we get off his logging road, and neither of us are as young as we used to be! Anyway - hopefully we'll have some maple syrup in a few weeks. Thank you Syd for all the tubing and taps you gave us - they sure are coming in handy!
