Wow - I didn't realize it has been so long since my last post! Life seems to get in the way of keeping up!
Yesterday Sam and I went to the Pocono 400 NASCAR race in Long Pond, PA (about 20 miles from my place). Neither of us had been before and it was on Sam's "bucket list". I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. I've watched the races on TV, and they get boring after a while. Wow, is it different in person! The noise of the cars is unbelievable, and the crowd is huge. We had a wonderful time and are talking about going back again next year. Here's a few pics!
During the opening ceremonies a Brigadier General was there to swear in a group of new military recruits.
It was a really moving ceremony followed by a prayer, the National Anthem and a fly-over of WWII military planes.
Tatum Channing and Jonah Hill from the upcoming movie "22 Jump Street" with the command -
DRIVERS - START YOUR ENGINES!
And - they're off and racing !!
Here's the #99 pit crew servicing Carl Edward's car during a pit stop. Weiler Corporation, where I work, is one of the sponsors for the #99 car thru Fastenal. Unfortunately, Carl was involved in a wreck near the end of the race - oh well, maybe we'll get 'em next time!
Here's me at the Fastenal souvenir trailer. Since Weiler is a sponsor for this car, figured I'd better get one picture!

Part of the grandstand from down in the "pits" - our seats were near the top just underneath the skybox.
We even got to tour pit road and stand in the pit stalls. We talked to a few members of the pit crews, and they were very nice and willing to answer all our questions.
Here's Sam sitting on the pit wall. In a couple of hours, the pit crews will be leaping over this wall to service the cars during their pit stops.

So you didn't get to see Carl do a backflip from his door? This looked like FUN. I've never been to any of the big races. If you want to experience a VT race, come to Bear Ridge (we've only been twice in 15 years, but would be glad to take you guys). It's a dirt track, and on a hot summer night you come home with dirt all over your cheeks. Sam would probably love it. It's fun, really.
ReplyDeleteNo backflip from Carl this time - and I understand he is leaving the Fastenal team next year, so who knows who we will be sponsoring. Would love to go to Bear Ridge with you guys some day. Years ago I used to go to Claremont Speedway when Fred's brother worked on a pit crew.
ReplyDeleteHope everything else is good with you both and with your Mom. Not much new with us. Took a vacation day on Friday and went to Alden Lake with the bass boat - didn't catch anything but a sunburn. Sam got 2 bass and 2 pickerel - nothing "keepin" size, though.
Love you both!
